What is ICSI treatment?
ICSI involves the injection of a single sperm directly into a mature egg.
The fertility treatment consists of several steps, firstly stimulating ovaries to produce a mature egg, then egg retrieval and fertilisation which includes selecting sperm and identifying a mature egg.
Then it's insemination, fertilisation and culture, where the fertilised egg grows in a lab for a few days.
Embryo transfer follows, with women recommended to reduce their movement for the next 24 hours after the embryo has been introduced.

The luteal phase, two weeks between embryo transfer and a pregnancy test , follows before the all-important pregnancy test.
Only one embryo is transferred, in exceptional cases two, and the remaining good-quality embryos will be frozen and stored to be used in subsequent cycle if necessary.
How is it different from IVF?
IVF involves the same early stages, but when it comes to fertilisation the eggs are mixed in with the sperm.
In ICSI only one sperm is selected and injected directly into the egg.
