Not everyone abandons surrogates
This is just a short item, but I feel it needs to be written.
There have been many accounts of surrogates being ghosted by their agencies or clinics, left not knowing the identities of the people for whom they are carrying babies or how to reach them. It may not be an honourable thing to do, but neither is it surprising. This is a war, and everyone, including agency personnel, are fighting for their lives.
But I feel a need to acknowledge that there are still people who have not abandoned surrogates. They are standing by to help. There are doctors and nurses in hot zones helping with births, and agency people caring for surrogates who are unable to be evacuated.
One of these people is Oksana Hrytsiv, in Lviv, waiting with a surrogate who is carrying twins for a Canadian couple. The surrogate has had complications and is now on bed rest. She is 37 weeks pregnant and cannot be moved. Yes, it's Hrytsiv's job to stay — but it's also an act of bravery and compassion.
Hrytsiv is 36 years old, married, with two kids.
Meanwhile, the sirens keep blaring. The threat of war is ever present. No one knows what the future holds.
