Seasonal Impact on Fertility Treatments: Surrogacy and IVF Considerations

Have you ever wondered if the success of fertility treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF) and surrogacy could be influenced by the season of the year? A recent study from Australia suggests that the sunny summer season might be the best time to collect eggs for these treatments. This fascinating discovery opens up a new dimension in the field of fertility treatments, shedding light on the potential role of environmental factors in their success.

The Power of Summer in Fertility Treatments

The study, published in Human Reproduction, analyzed outcomes from frozen embryo transfers over an eight-year period. The researchers found that if the egg had been collected in summer rather than fall, the chances of having a successful embryo transfer and live birth were 30 per cent higher, regardless of when the embryo was implanted in the womb.

IVF is a process that involves removing eggs from ovaries and fertilizing them with sperm in a laboratory before being implanted in the womb. It's one of the most successful, albeit expensive, fertility treatments available. This process is often used in surrogacy, where a surrogate mother carries a child for someone else.

Interestingly, the study found that the temperature on the day of egg collection did not affect the chances of successful fertility treatment. However, the chances of live birth rate decreased by 18 per cent when the embryos were transferred on the hottest days compared to the coolest days.

The Role of Melatonin in Fertility

So, why might summer be a better season for egg retrieval? One theory involves melatonin, the sleep hormone that helps with circadian rhythm and also has antioxidant qualities. Melatonin levels are much higher during winter, and this exposure in the months before removal may impact the development competence of the egg.

While these findings are intriguing, it's important to remember that every individual's journey with fertility treatment is unique. Always talk to your doctor to figure out what's best for your health.

Susan and the Delivering Dreams team went FAR above and beyond for us They are the real deal of what surrogacy agencies should be. They care about the parents and equally care about their surrogates. To sum up an excruciatingly long story, prior to the invasion of Ukraine, Susan and her team helped us transfer to their agency after we’d had a bad experience with a different company. Those months of paperwork, Apostilles, etc etc were saved from requiring a redo because of her work with her ow...
