Fertility expert criticises 'explosion in bad media' about IVF in speech to industry

Fertility researchers have come under fire by a gynaecologist at a conference in Hobart this week for making negative comments about the IVF industry in the press. Senior member of the Fertility Society of Australia David Molloy criticised fellow members by name as well as state regulator the Victorian Assisted Reproductive Treatment Authority (VARTA) at the opening of the society's conference on Monday. "The last 12 months have seen an explosion in bad media. We've never had a worse year in terms of the media in relation to [assisted reproductive technology] … We need to answer it," said Professor Molloy,…

Here’s everything LGBT+ couples who are considering surrogacy need to know

Surrogacy for LGBT+ couples – What you need to know For those in the LGBT+ community, creating a family is not straightforward. Biology and the law have to both be considered long before a baby is conceived. We Blamed Women For Infertility For Actual Centuries, & Nothing Has Changed

As with the rest of her health picture, women bear the worry, emotional responsibility, and blame for their infertility — a lonely state even in 2019. A woman who struggles to conceive today will likely be bombarded with data about her body's malfunctions; sympathetic friends blaming tension and telling her to relax; wondering what she did to invite such misfortune. All of the blame heaped on an involuntarily childless woman is rooted in centuries of superstition and shame. Throughout recorded history, consensus has been that the inability to conceive is caused by a defect (physical, mental, or moral) in the…

3 Things to Say (and Not to Say) to Friends Experiencing Infertility

As a marriage and family therapist, I regularly help people grieve “things” that they never actually had or experienced. Clients grieve the loss of hopes for a successful career that never came to fruition, dreams for a marriage that never came to be, or expectations for their own childhood that were never met. I’ve also witnessed a client grieve her birth experience—hopes she had for the birth of her child that went drastically, even traumatically, different than she had expected. Another common experience involving grief? Infertility. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), around 10 percent of women in…

Things you should never ask a woman dealing with infertility

5 things you should never ask a woman dealing with infertility 1. Sometimes despite the best intentions, we end up saying things that may sound hurtful. The situation becomes worse when we say such things to people who are already struggling emotionally. Talking about emotional struggle, if you have a family member or a friend trying to get pregnant, your instinct will be to comfort her by telling her that things will be fine, while adding a few tips and tricks that you feel work. While you may mean to comfort her, you will be surprised to know that this…
